[우성훈 기자]파키스탄과 한국은 1983년 이후 대사급에서 외교 관계를 맺고 있다. 우리는 이미 이전 기사에서 양국 관계의 역사적 뿌리에 대해 논의해왔기 때문에, 이제 우리는 작년 새 대사가 도착한 이후 서울에 있는 파키스탄 대사관의 활동에 초점을 맞출 것이다.

라힘 하야트 쿠레시 대사는 2017년 7월 18일 문재인 대통령에게 신임장을 수여했다. 그는 현재 한국의 파키스탄 대사이고 두 나라 사이의 문화적 상호작용에 새로운 에너지를 불어넣었다.

# 서울에서 처음으로 열리는 불교미술전

파키스탄에서 열린 최초의 불교 미술품 전시회는 2017년 6월부터 9월까지 예술의 전당에서 열렸다. 10만 명 이상의 방문객이 참석했다. 간다하라 문명의 유물 40점이 서울에서 전시됐다.

# 파키스탄은 2018년 평창 동계 올림픽 참가

파키스탄 출신의 세 명의 멤버 팀이 동계 올림픽에 참가했다. 파키스탄은 히말라야, 카라코람, 힌두쿠시 등 세계에서 가장 높은 산맥이 있기 때문에 산악과 동계 스포츠에서 엄청난 성장을 할 수 있는 잠재력을 지니고 있다

# 2018년 파키스탄 투자 회의

‘파키스탄 강화: 쌍무 투자와 교역의 기회’라는 제목의 이 회의는 한국의 주요 기업들과 대기업들로부터 140명 이상의 대표들이 참여했다.

파키스탄에서 온 특별 대표단이 이 독특한 회의에 초대됐다. 이 회의는 수메라 나지르 시디키 박사와 기획개발부, 상무부, 쇼아이브 아흐메드 시드의 수석 대표들이 참석했다.

곽성규 파키스탄 주재 한국대사는 환영사에서 파키스탄을 한국 기업의 이상적인 투자처로 만드는 개선된 안보상황과 기업친화적 정책을 강조했다.

파키스탄의 라힘 하야트 쿠에르시 대사는 환영사에서 “강한 경제적, 사업적 관계가 안정적이고, 장기적, 지속 가능한 사람들에게 필수적인 전제조건”이라고 말했다. 그는 또한 세계에서 6번째로 인구가 많은 파키스탄은 8천만 명의 중산층이 있고, 전략적으로 위치하며 정치적으로 안정된, 매력적인 투자 정책을 제공하는 것은 글로벌 기업이 놓칠 수 없는 목적지라고 덧붙였다.

한국 기업의 참석자들은 파키스탄의 고위 대표들의 발표로 이득을 보았다. 이 컨퍼런스의 중요한 측면은 지적 투자(예: 대학 및 기관 및 관광과 같은 미개발 부문)와 같이 점점 더 중요한 투자 기회를 식별하는 것이었다.

내년 파키스탄과 한국의 교역규모는 134억 달러(약 134조 원)로 2015년 8억2800만 달러(약 8억8000만 원)보다 꾸준히 증가했다. 이러한 엄청난 증가는 두 나라 사이의 강화된 경제 관계를 반영한다.
이 행사는 100개 이상의 회사를 유치했고, 국내 언론에서 폭넓은 보도를 받았다. 서울의 파키스탄 대사관은 사업과 파키스탄을 적극적으로 홍보하는 좋은 본보기가 될 수 있을 만큼 투자하기 좋은 나라이다.

# 파키스탄 대사관은 매력적인 문화와 음식 소개

주한 파키스탄대사관은 (사)식문화세계교류협회와 공동으로 7월 10일 서울 임페리얼호텔에서 제1회 파키스탄-한국 문화-기업 포럼을 공동 개최했다. 라힘 하야트 쿠레시 주한 파키스탄대사는 “두 나라가 2차 세계대전 직후 식민지화와 독립 등 많은 유사점을 공유하고 있다”고 말했다.

한국이 1945년 8월 15일에 독립을 쟁취한 반면, 파키스탄은 수세기 동안의 영국 식민 통치 후에 인도를 분할함으로써 1947년 8월 14일 주권 국가로 설립됐다. “우리의 역사적 유사성은 우리 민족과 문화에 까지 미친다. 100명이 넘는 한국 기업인과 고위 인사들이 참석한 이 행사에서 우리는 모두 원로들과 선생님들을 존경하며 충실히 우리 가족을 위해 헌신합니다”라고 말했다.

파키스탄과 한국 가수, 예술가들도 공연을 했고 참가자들은 두 나라의 음식을 즐겼다. 조경태 국회 금융위원장은 파키스탄과 한국인들이 음식, 문화, 사업을 통해 서로 가까이 다가갈 수 있도록 노력한 것에 대해 감사를 표했다.

“파키스탄 음식은 맛있고 문화도 풍부하다. 우리는 파키스탄 대사관과의 협력이 매우 자랑스러우며 양국 국민의 이익을 위해 더 유사한 행사를 조직하고 싶습니다,” 라고 류현미 (사)식문화세계교류협회 회장이 말했다. 류회장은 또 대사관의 사회복지와 문화문제 상담자인 무하마드 샤피크 하이더와 파키스탄의 한인 사업가이자 전직 명예투자자문단인 소바 칸에게 감사장을 수여했다.

한국에는 사업가, 학생, 근로자를 포함하여 12,000명 이상의 파키스탄인들이 있다. 대사관은 이전에 파키스탄의 타실라 지역에서 온 20개 이상의 불교 유물을 전시한 간달란 문명에 대한 전시회를 작년에 개최했다. 대사관에 따르면 그 행사는 100,000명이 넘는 방문객들이 다녀갔다고 한다.<끝>

Pakistan and South Korea have had Diplomatic Relations since 1983 at Ambassadorial level. As we have discussed historical roots of the relationship already in earlier articles, we will now focus on activities of the Embassy of Pakistan in Seoul since the arrival of the new Ambassador last year.

H.E. Ambassador Rahim Hayat Qureshi presented credentials to President Moon Jae-In on July 18 2017. He is currently the Ambassador of Pakistan to RoK and has brought new energy into the cultural interactions between the two countries.

# Buddhist Artefacts Exhibition held in Seoul for the first time:

The first ever Buddhist Artefacts Exhibition from Pakistan was held at the Seoul Arts Centre from June to September 2017. It was attended by more than 100,000 visitors. 40 artefacts from Gandhara civilization’s period were exhibited in Seoul.

# Pakistan participated at the PyeongChang winter Olympics 2018:

A three member team from Pakistan participated at the Winter Olympics. Pakistan has potential for tremendous growth in alpine and winter sports due to the presence of world’s highest mountain ranges namely Himalayas, Karakoram and the Hindukush.

# Pakistan Investment Conference 2018:

The conference, titled “Emerging Pakistan: opportunities for bilateral Investment and Trade“, attracted more than 140 representatives from important Korean companies and conglomerates.

A special delegation from Pakistan was invited for this unique conference, comprising of the Secretary Board of Investment, Dr. Sumera Nazir Siddiqui, Secretary Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms , Mr. Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, senior representatives from KpK and Punjab Boards of Investment and Trade accompanied by senior business delegates.

The Chief Guest, Ambassador of Korea to Pakistan, H.E. Sung-Kyu Kwak, in his welcoming remarks, highlighted the improved security situation and business friendly policies making Pakistan the ideal investment destination for Korean companies.

In his welcoming remarks, the Ambassador of Pakistan, H.E. Rahim Hayat Qureshi, said ” I firmly believe that a strong economic and business relationship is an essential pre-requisite for stable, long term and sustainable people to people relations.” He further added that ” Pakistan with its sixth largest population in the world, 80 million middle class, blessed with rich human and natural resources, strategically located, politically stable, offering attractive investment policies is a destination no global player can miss.”

The attendees from Korean companies benefitted from the presentations by the senior representatives from Pakistan, including the Secretaries, the provincial BoITs of KPK and Punjab and bi-lateral interactions with the visiting delegates. An important aspect of the conference was identifying increasingly important investment opportunities, such as Intellectual Investment i.e. in Universities and Institutions and also in un-tapped sectors like Tourism.

The bilateral trade between Pakistan and Korea stands at USD 1.34 Billion in 2017, steadily having increased from USD 828 million in 2015. This sizeable increase reflects a strengthening economic relation between the two countries.

The event attracted more than 100 companies and was given wide coverage in local Korean media. Embassy of Pakistan in Seoul has set a wonderful example of pro-actively reaching out to businesses and marketing Pakistan well as a viable investment friendly country.

# Pakistan Embassy showcased slice of enticing culture and food:

The Pakistani Embassy in Seoul, in collaboration with the International Food and Culture Exchange Association of Korea, co-hosted the inaugural Pakistan-Korea Culture, Food and Business Forum at Imperial Palace Hotel Seoul on July 10.

Pakistani Ambassador to Korea Rahim Hayat Qureshi said the two countries shared many similarities, including colonialization and independence shortly after World War II. While Korea gained its independence on Aug. 15, 1945, Pakistan was established as a sovereign state on Aug. 14, 1947, through the partitioning of India after centuries of British colonial rule.

“Our historical similarities also extend to our peoples and cultures. We both hold our elders and teachers in high regard, and faithfully devote ourselves to our families,” he said at the event, which was attended by more than 100 Korean businesspeople and dignitaries.

Pakistani and Korean singers and artists performed as well, with participants enjoying the two nations’ cuisines.

Korean congressman and chairman of the Financial Committee at the National Assembly, Rep. Cho Kyung-tae, expressed appreciation in a speech for efforts to bring the Pakistani and Korean peoples closer to one another through food, culture and business.

“Pakistani food is delicious and its culture is rich. We are very proud of this collaboration with the Embassy of Pakistan, and would like to organize more similar events for the benefit of both countries’ peoples,” said Ryoo Hyun-mi, chairperson of the International Food and Culture Exchange Association Korea.

Ryoo also presented certificates of appreciation to Muhammad Shafiq Haider, a counselor for community welfare and cultural affairs at the embassy, as well as Sooba Khan, a Pakistani-Korean businessman and former honorary investment counselor at the embassy, for their contributions to organizing the event and strengthening bilateral ties.

There are more than 12,000 Pakistanis in South Korea, including businesspeople, students and workers. The embassy previously hosted an exhibition on the Gandharan civilization last year, which featured more than 20 Buddhist artifacts from Pakistan’s Taxila region. The event attracted over 100,000 visitors, according to the embassy.
